Shokupan

Freshly baked in-house every day, our original shokupan is the star of the show at Taku Sando. Shokupan, which literally means “staple food bread,” is a Japanese-style milk bread known for its beautifully fluffy texture, and simple, slightly sweet flavor.

Created in the 18th century with the introduction of Western food, it is an iconic staple beloved for pairing phenomenally with any savory item, much like a bowl of rice. We see sandos as the pinnacle of what is called “sozai pan (side dish bread)”; a category of bread that typically combines milk bread with savory fillings or toppings to be enjoyed as a casual meal or snack.

Although the simplicity of the shokupan may make it seem secondary to the other components, from a Japanese perspective it represents a wholesome luxury, and is the heart of the meal. This is why we have stayed true to a familiar obsession with this bread in creating our very own shokupan, using only quality local ingredients and zero additives.
